The cleanest distinction

A product software engineer usually optimizes a shared product for many users. An FDE optimizes a deployment outcome inside a specific customer's constraints, while deciding which patterns should return to the core product.

The two roles can share the same engineering bar. They differ in context switching, customer proximity, planning horizon, and the meaning of success.

Trade-offs

FDE work offers breadth, direct business context, and visible impact. It can also bring travel, fragmented environments, shorter planning cycles, and less ownership of a single codebase over years.

  • Choose SWE if you prefer deep product continuity and platform leverage
  • Choose FDE if you prefer ambiguous field problems and direct customer outcomes
  • Ask how much code returns to the core product
  • Ask who owns the system after handoff

Can you move back?

Yes, but the strength of the transition depends on the role. Production-owning FDE work can build strong systems and leadership evidence. A role dominated by demos, tickets, or coordination may make a later technical narrative harder.

Inspect the actual work rather than relying on the title.
