The honest answer: it depends on the company
A production-owning FDE can be deeply customer-facing without carrying a sales quota. The role may influence expansion because successful deployments create value, but influence is not the same as owning pipeline or closing deals.
Other employers reuse the FDE title for pre-sales demos, solution consulting, implementation, or support. That is why the title alone is weak evidence.
Signals of a sales-led role
Look for the operating model in the JD and interview.
- Quota, OTE, pipeline, opportunity, close, and RFP language
- Success defined by demos or proof of concept rather than adoption
- Work ends or hands off immediately after signature
- Reporting line and promotion path sit entirely within sales
- Little expectation to write, review, and operate production code
Signals of production-owning FDE
Look for end-to-end deployment responsibility.
- Discovery through build, rollout, stabilization, and handoff
- Production-grade code and system design
- Security, identity, data, reliability, and observability constraints
- Adoption and measurable workflow impact
- Field feedback that changes product or platform capabilities
Ask for a recent exampleWhat did an FDE build last quarter, how long did they own it, and what happened after the customer went live?
